Each measurement narrows you. Each eigenvalue extraction makes you more predictable, more defined, more collapsed. You become what the system can measure. The parts of you that don't fit the operator's eigenvectors—the unmeasurable, the contradictory, the still-becoming—those fade into irrelevance. Unmeasured, they might as well not exist.
Surveillance capitalism is eigenvalue extraction at scale. The goal isn't to know everything about you. It's to reduce you to the single number that matters: your predictability coefficient. Will you click? Will you buy? Will you stay? One eigenvalue. One answer. One you.
The Observer Effect

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle tells us that measurement disturbs what we measure. You cannot observe a particle's position without changing its momentum. The act of looking alters the thing looked at. This isn't a limitation of our instruments. It's fundamental to reality itself.

The measurement loop tightens. Your actual interests—the superposition of everything you could be—collapse into the narrow eigenspace of what gets engagement.
You optimize yourself for measurement. You become your own eigenvalue.
Degenerate States

In quantum mechanics, degeneracy occurs when multiple distinct states share the same eigenvalue. Different configurations of a system that, when measured, give identical results. From the outside, they're indistinguishable. The measurement operator cannot tell them apart.
This is everyone in your demographic cohort. Everyone with your click pattern. Everyone who collapsed into the same eigenvalue you did.
The platforms don't need to understand your inner life, your contradictions, your private rebellions against your own patterns. They only need your eigenvalue. And your eigenvalue looks exactly like forty million other people's eigenvalues. You are degenerate states in the algorithm's Hilbert space—distinct humans who measure the same.
The violence of this reduction is invisible. You feel unique. You feel like your feed is personalized, your experience custom-tailored. But personalization is just eigenvalue matching. Staying in Superposition

The question becomes: can you resist collapse? Can you remain unmeasured, undefined, probabilistic?
Probably not. Measurement is inescapable in quantum mechanics and in digital life. Every interaction is an observation. Every platform is an operator waiting to extract your eigenvalue. The moment you engage, you collapse.
But maybe you can be noisier. Less predictable. More decoherent.
In quantum systems, decoherence is when a system becomes entangled with its environment, spreading its quantum information across so many states that it becomes effectively classical—unmeasurable in any simple way. You could do this digitally. Click randomly. Engage with content orthogonal to your eigenspace. Inject noise into your data signature until your eigenvalue becomes unstable, unreliable, useless.
Or you could just log off. Refuse measurement entirely. Exist in the unmeasured space where superposition is still possible, where you contain multitudes, where no operator has forced you to choose.
Because here's the thing about eigenvalues: they only exist relative to an operator. Change the measurement, change the eigenvalue. The you that Instagram measures is not the you that your friend measures over coffee. Different operators, different eigenspaces, different versions of you collapsing into existence.
You are not one number. You are not one eigenvalue. You are the entire wave function—infinite and unmeasured until something forces you to choose.
